Halibut Fishing 2001

Fishing is one of our favorite things to do...Ron & I meet on a charter boat that I was working on...So you can see we really like to fish. Halibut season is a short one, they only give you 2 or 3 weekends to fish for deep water halibut in 300 fathoms or more. This was the first time we took our own boat out. We were fishing in 300 to 600 feet of water about 10 miles off shore straight out from Bandon, Oregon. It can be exhausting fishing in that deep of water, just reeling up to move the boat takes it out of you.....but wait till you get a fish on, it's like trying to bring up the bottom. We made three trips out last year, but not being experienced at halibut fishing we lost a lot of fish the first two trips, we were fishing with 90 LB test and steel leaders and they still broke loose. Our last trip Colby finally got a 40 pounder in the boat. We also caught some really nice bottom fish while we were out lookin for the halibut.
So we didn't get skunked, we always came home with something.
